UAW Region 1A

Covers most of Wayne County, Mich., (including part of Detroit), Monroe County and Washtenaw County, and extends to the Ohio border.

The approximately 150,000 active and retired members in Region 1A come from Ford, General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, AutoAlliance, Michigan health care facilities, state and county offices and facilities and a variety of other workplaces.

Local 36
Local 36 represents approximately 2,600 members who build the Lincoln Town Car, Lincoln LS and Ford Thunderbird at the Ford Assembly Plant in Wixom, Mich. More than 2,200 retires are also members of Local 36.

Local 174's Stephen P. Yokich Education Center
Lively, up-to-date information about a jointly run UAW-GM education center that provides educational opportunities to UAW-represented GM Employees, their spouses and retirees.

Local 245
This amalgamated local represents 1,800 active members as well as over 700 retired members. Active members work at Ford Motor Company’s Research and Engineering Center in Dearborn, Mich., Ford’s Troy Design in Redford and Warren, Mich., Ford’s Air Transportation facilities in Romulus, Mich., and at The Edison Institute, home to the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village.

Local 387
The local represents approximately 2,200 members who work at Ford Motor Company's Woodhaven (Mich.) Stamping Plant, and 160 members at Ford's forging unit, also located in Woodhaven. Some 1,600 retirees are also members of Local 387.

Local 735
The members of local 735 make transmissions for General Motors. In addition to the 4,600 members at the Powertrain Transmission Plant in Ypsilanti, Mich., and 400 members at the Romulus (Mich.) Transmission Operation, the local also represents some 2,000 retirees.

Local 845
This local, founded in 1967, represents Ford Climate Control and other workers in Canton, Michigan.

Local 892
This local represents Ford and other workers in the Ann Arbor, Michigan area.

Local 898
The 2,300 members of Local 898 make fuel injectors, fuel pumps, altenators and other fuel charging components at the Visteon facility in Rawsonville, Michigan.

Local 900
This local, to the west of Detroit, represents workers at three Ford plants in Wayne, Michigan where they make the Escort car, F-150 truck and Ford Expedition truck.

Local 985
This amalgamated local union represents workers with no less than 36 employers in the western Detroit metropolitan area, including several steel and auto supplier companies, and even the Inkster police department.

Local 1284
UAW Local 1284, under the leadership of Russel (Tiny) Clintsman, was formed in 1953, the year after Engineering Operations started at Chrysler's Chelsea Proving Grounds. The 340 members of Local 1284 consist of Durability Driver/Mechanics, Technicians, Photographers, Housekeeping, and Building & Grounds Maintenance.

Local 1981 - Southeast Michigan Chapter of the National Writers Union
The National Writers Union (NWU) is the trade union for freelance writers of all genres who work for American publishers or employers. They are committed to improving the economic and working conditions of freelance writers through the collective strength of their 6,500 members in 17 local chapters throughout the country. The Southeast Michigan chapter has about 140 members located around the state.

Director: Rory Gamble

Rory Gamble Rory L. Gamble was elected director of Region 1A on June 14, 2006, at the UAW’s 34th Constitutional Convention in Las Vegas.

Region 1A covers most of Wayne County, Mich., (including part of Detroit), Monroe and Washtenaw counties, and extends to the Ohio border.

Gamble, a welder fixture repairman, joined the UAW in 1974 as a welder at the Ford Motor Co. Dearborn Frame Plant. He immediately became active in Local 600 and has since served in numerous elected and appointed positions.

In 1975 Local 600 members elected him to serve as a trustee of the Dearborn Frame Plant.

From 1976 to 1979 he was the local’s alternate benefit representative. He served as the bargaining committee chair in 1984 and, in 1988, he was appointed staff director and administrative assistant for UAW Local 600 President Jim McNeil with responsibilities for third-stage grievance agendas for all Ford Rouge plants and as editor of UAW Facts, the local’s newspaper. He was elected delegate to the UAW’s 32nd Constitutional Convention and served on the Constitution Committee.

Since 1987 Gamble’s assignments have included local union health and safety coordinator, employee support services program, education director, civil rights coordinator, fitness center coordinator and family services and learning center coordinator.

He has served as director of Local 600 Ford Motor Co. units including Dearborn Engine and Fuel Tank, Dearborn Truck Plant, Milan, Industrial Athlete, and Dearborn Frame Plant. Other assignments have included retirees’ liaison and coordinator of the Rouge Rehabilitation Center. 

In 1993 and 2003 Gamble served on the UAW-Ford National Negotiating Team. From 1993 to 2002, he was elected to three terms as the local’s recording secretary. Gamble was elected first vice president of Local 600 in 2002 and re-elected in 2005.

In 1999 Gamble received the Spirit of Detroit award. He is a member of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, the Trade Union Leaders Council, the Michigan Humane Society and a Life member of the NAACP. He serves on the board of Bridging Communities, a grassroots collaborative of Southwest Detroit businesses, labor organizations, churches and residents. He is co-chair of the Michigan Labor History Society, treasurer of the Rouge Employees Credit Union  and a lifetime supporter of Southwest Detroit Little League.

Gamble is a graduate of the labor studies program at Wayne State University. He lives in Lathrup Village, Mich., and is the father of five children — Anthony, Rory Jr., Raenard, Rashaun and Rahshidah — and 14 grandchildren.
