Educating our young people

The UAW believes that — no matter what your age — education empowers people. That's why we are strongly committed to expanding educational opportunities for our members and their families through our Local Union Education Committees, the UAW Education Department and our Family Education Center.

We also are committed to helping educate those outside the labor movement about the vital role unions play in protecting employees' rights at work. This is especially crucial in our schools — where, far too often, information about unions is not a part of the curriculum. Many high school students today are also workers. Unfortunately, these young workers, like their older counterparts, are not always aware of the benefits and protections a union contract offers.

This site provides an interactive program, which includes a teacher's guide, handouts and slide show that focuses on child labor in America past and present. Also included is a list of other resources to help get labor's message into the schools.

It is our hope that the materials and resources provided on this site will offer educators and students the tools they need to both teach and learn about the importance of unions in our workplaces and in our society.

"The labor movement stands for social and economic justice for all of us, not just some of us," says UAW President Ron Gettelfinger. "This is the message we need to get out to young people."
