Nonfarm payroll employment jumped by a seasonally-adjusted 416,000
jobs in March. That was a big turnaround from February, when job growth
essentially stalled. Helping to boost the March payroll figure was
the creation of an estimated 117,000 temporary Census jobs.
-
Average hourly earnings for production and nonsupervisory workers
in private industry rose 5 cents in March to $13.60. Manufacturing
earnings averaged $14.24. When overtime premiums are excluded, however,
the manufacturing average drops to $13.50. (All of these figures are
seasonally adjusted.
